At this time of the year, a lot of people often contact me about how to stay motivated when undergoing a new regime, whether it be fitness, meditation, or focussing more on themselves as part of a coaching package.
My response to each of the people often comes down to three main things:
Firstly, you must have the courage to start, the strength to endure and the resolve to finish- you must not settle for comfort. In order to start a journey of transformation you must recognise that your mind, body and spirit are intricately connected. Jen Nicomedes said, “Letting go is the scariest and most liberating thing you can do for yourself. It’s a gift in disguise.” Your desire to be ‘healthy’ in 2016 will certainly be sustainable thus making all the difference to the transformation of your mind, body and spirit.
Secondly, you have to find something you enjoy doing. The training will be hard work initially but eventually the workouts (for your mind, body or spirit) will leave you feeling great afterwards. Keep chasing that feeling! Once you have a preferred method of exercise, set a goal for it, perhaps it is to master a certain yoga pose, a goal will keep you committed.
Finally, our minds are incredible at coming up with excuses as to why we should not or cannot exercise or practise something. You will want to hit the snooze button on the alarm or rush home immediately after a long day at work instead of going to the gym. Make a date in your diary for each session and treat it as an important engagement you must attend. Arrange to meet with some friends to do your session together. Soon enough you will be looking forward to those sessions and make it about being the best YOU possible.
